Event Description

In class, you will gain actionable insights and techniques to bring your memoir or family story to life—without overstepping the truth.

Specifically:

· Start with oral history interviewing and great question prompts to spark insights.

· Overcome writer’s block by focusing on vignettes, which are self-contained stories that have all the essential elements but are less intimidating to tackle.

· Flesh out your characters to highlight their personality and values, making them inspiring to readers.

· Set scenes within the Goldilocks zone of detail: not too much, not too little, but just right.

· Navigate sensitive subjects with empathy.

· Learn the most critical elements of story structure so you hit the right emotional notes.

When you craft stories using what you learn, you can create an emotional bond with readers, sharing values without being preachy. Finally, doing this work will change you in ways you cannot anticipate when you embark on the journey.

Attendees will receive a storyboard template, great question prompts, and will do fun guided practice exercises in class. You will complete this session feeling excited to begin and equipped to enhance the most compelling aspects of your story.
